Bulterys House

The South Peace Health Services Society was formed by the mayors of Dawson Creek, Pouce Coupe, Tumbler Ridge, and Chetwynd, along with directors from the Peace River Regional District, to help recruit and keep healthcare professionals in the South Peace region. The idea of offering patient accommodation came about because people needed to travel long distances to Dawson Creek for treatments like maternity, oncology, and surgery, adding stress due to travel and extra costs.

When Dr. Bulterys, an OBGYN, passed away, his widow sold his clinic, which led to the idea of turning it into a patient accommodation facility. Fundraising efforts were supported by local businesses, organizations, and First Nations communities, and the project was funded through a grant from NDIT and support from the Peace River Regional District.

The Society worked with the Ministry of Health to secure funding to operate the facility under a contract with the Dawson Creek Society for Community Living. As a result, Bulterys House opened in March 2023. This beautiful, 6-bedroom, 4 ½-bath facility is just a block from the hospital and provides low-cost accommodations for patients and their families. Rooms are available for $30 per night, with access to shared spaces like a kitchen, dining area, lounge, laundry, and a playroom for kids.

With this initiative, our goal is to provide affordable accommodations for those requiring overnight or long-term stays while receiving medical treatment in Dawson Creek.

Bulterys House is a 6-bedroom, 5-bathroom, wheelchair accessible home with a shared kitchen and eating area, two lounge areas, and shared laundry.

The carriage house built on the same property is leased to Northern Health and is the home away from home for agency travel nurses while they work in our community.

The Bulterys House is operated by the Dawson Creek Society for Community Living. Please visit their website to learn more and access the intake form.

Testimonials

  • --"Thank you to Bulterys House for the amazing hospitality during our stay last month while I was pregnant. We are from the North, where medical services are limited, meaning late in my 3rd trimester I had to head south for maternity care. The cost of travel and lodging would have been completely unaffordable and out of reach if I stayed at a hotel. Upon booking and throughout my stay, the staff were incredibly kind and professional. The room and shared spaces are both clean and comfortable; my son loved the playroom, and I enjoyed use of the full kitchen. The hospital is a very short walk away from the house and close to the downtown area too. This community resource has made medical treatment more accessible to our Northern communities, for which I'm extremely grateful; I would definitely recommend Bulterys House to anyone traveling to Dawson Creek for medical reasons!!”
